Shopping for babies of any age is fun, no matter what brand of baby clothing, the tiny sizes, unique patterns, softness of materials, and joy of imagining a baby in the clothes make the entire experience enjoyable. Brands in baby clothing often only matter to the parents, quality should really dictate which brands are purchased.

Market Marvels - eBay is the biggest online marketplace. People often sell bundles of items, like baby clothes, so you can get real bargains. We found a new Phil & Teds E3 Double buggy for £290, with all accessories. But, as with any ‘trading’ website, don’t buy a car seat as there is no guarantee of its history; only bid on items that have a photo; check the sellers rating and don’t forget to add postage charges. Finally, don’t get into a bidding frenzy and pay over the odds!

Good As New - For nearly-new items, visit the NCT’s website or try Nappy Valley (nappyvalley.co.uk), which tells you how near the seller is, so you can collect. Currently mainly limited to London, the site has won lots of award. Best buy at the time of writing was a second-hand Bugaboo Frog, in good condition, with the instruction booklet, for £350.

Pay Nothing - Take a look at freecycle.org. It’s a global, non-profit network of localised groups who give away unwanted stuff to any other member of their group who wants it. It’s a bit hit-and-miss, as people simply send emails detailing what they want to give away. But it’s well worth checking out, especially if you have stuff to get rid of, as it works on a give-and-receive basis. To join, go to the website address and follow the instructions to find your local group.

Designer Style - Sign up for TK Maxx’s Hot@rrivals- an email service that lets you know when exiting stuff is arriving in store (tkmaxx.com). All items, including designer labels, are up to 60% off. If you can get into London, Junior Style Sales (juniorstylesales.co.uk) offers great discounts on designer fashion at warehouse sales four times a year. And, as well as designer names, it also sells organic and fairtrade products.

Plan To Save Cash - If you’re good at planning ahead, are going on holiday or don’t mind buying out of season, there are traditional sales, with the internet again generally offering better deals than the high street. Among our favourites is Jojo Maman Bebe. Although it offes regularly updated sale items throughout the year, the end-of-season discounts can be as high as 70%. Mini Boden (miniboden.co.uk) is usually out of our budget, but the 50% discounts in July and December make its fashion more affordable (jumpers down from £30 to £11.50, say), and the website has a great ‘My sizes’ feature- it only shows clothes in the sizes you want.
